Paul J. Bruno, 89, of West Ferry Street, died early Tuesday of injuries suffered Monday night when he was struck by a taxi while crossing the street to his car after visiting his wife in a hospital, authorities said.
Bruno, who suffered head and other injuries, was pronounced dead at 1:54 a.m. in Erie County Medical Center, where he was taken after the accident in front of Sisters Hospital on Main Street shortly before 7:30 p.m.
A witness told police Bruno was walking with his head down when he crossed in front of the cab in the six-lane street. No charges were filed against the driver, identified as Bruce C. Stevenson, 43.
The victim carried no identification, but police found a keyless entry device in his pocket and tried it on various cars parked in the area until they found one that responded. They then traced the license plate to Bruno.
He had been visiting his wife in Sisters.
Investigating officers included Paul Sullivan of the Accident Investigation Unit, Ronald Conrad of the K-9 Unit and Mary Evans and John Petricca of the Northwest District.
