Newstead Highway Superintendent Gary L. Fogal, who had announced his retirement at the end of the month, will continue to serve the town on an interim basis until a replacement is hired.
The Town Board met in a special session this week to discuss the appointment, and officially appointed Fogal. He will be paid $170 a day and also assist the town during a transition period.
The board earlier had expressed concern over the need to have an interim superintendent until the post is filled and recommended the retiring highway superintendent.
Officials, who recently honored Fogal for his 22 years of service, pointed to the progress and accomplishments the town has realized as a result of the highway department. Among the achievements are major improvement projects and developments, rebuilding and maintaining roads, working together with the Village of Akron and neighboring municipalities by sharing services and equipment, as well as several others.
Fogal credits his efficient crew of six full time employees. "The town is very fortunate to have them," Fogal said Tuesday.
The Town Board is advertising for the post, with applications due by Dec. 31.
