Lettie H. Schofer, 86, a retired elementary school teacher and widow of a longtime Blasdell pastor, died Tuesday (Dec. 21, 1999) in Lakewood Nursing Home, Hamburg, after a brief illness.
A longtime resident of Blasdell, the former Lettie Corey taught elementary grades in the Frontier Central School District for 32 years. She retired in 1967.
Mrs. Schofer was the widow of the Rev. Albert G. and served the congregation with him during his 37 years as pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Blasdell. He died in 1996.
She was a leader or member for many years of the church's Missionary Society, Lutheran Church Women's Organization, Senior Choir, Altar Guild and Sunday Church School.
She was well-known for the plays she wrote and directed at the church.
Mrs. Schofer was a member of the Rotary Anns of the South Shore Rotary Club, the Women's Guild of Niagara Lutheran Home, the Women's Organization of the Lutheran Church Home and the Girl Scouts.
She also was an avid reader, enjoyed crocheting and traveled extensively with her husband and family.
Born in Westfield, Mass., Mrs. Schofer grew up in the Woodlawn section of Hamburg. She was a graduate of Woodlawn High School and earned her teaching degree at the former Fredonia Normal School, now Fredonia State College.
She had lived in Lakewood Nursing Home since 1994 and served on the home's residents council.
Mrs. Schofer is survived by two sons, Retired Army Col. Glen A. of Olympia, Wash., and Alvin Lee of Hamburg; three daughters, Rae Marie Koenig of Shrewsbury, Mass., Karen Fae Abel of Hamburg and Ellen Lee Harmon of Springville; 13 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Blasdell, 66 Arthur Ave.
