Police are continuing their investigation of a suspicious device that was found at a convenience store and reported to headquarters at 5:22 p.m. Monday.
Police Chief John Yannie said Tuesday it was not "of a bomb or explosive nature." The device was found at the store at Fifth and Main streets, Yannie said, and the Dunkirk Fire Department and Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department Bomb Disposal Unit were called in to assist.
"Police responded with standard prudent procedures to investigate the incident and secure the area. A bomb specialist was called in for analysis," he said.
The immediate area was evacuated for about three hours, according to the police report.
"The device proved to be nothing of a bomb or explosive nature. It was not a harmful device," Yannie said.
