Coming attractions

The Kenmore East girls basketball team will certainly head into the annual Matt Colpoys Memorial Tournament on an upswing. The Blue Devils knocked off two-time Section VI Class B champion Williamsville East, 58-39, last Friday to end the Flames' 36-game winning streak vs. Western New York competition. Kenmore East will play Mt. St. Mary's at 6 p.m. on Dec. 29 while Kenmore West takes on Buffalo Seminary at 7:30. The consolation and championship are Dec. 30 at 6 p.m. and 7:30.

The holidays offer up the usual healthy helping of boys basketball tournaments, with interesting fields at Timon/St. Jude (Lancaster, Seneca, Hutch-Tech; Dec. 27-28), at Nichols (Canisius, McKinley, Buffalo Arts; Dec. 28-29) and for the Hamburg Sun Holiday Tournament at Hilbert College (St. Francis, Lake Shore, Frontier and Hamburg; Dec. 27, 29-30). There are also a few intriguing nonleague matchups: defending Yale Cup champion Seneca is at Sweet Home (4-1) tonight; Iroquois (6-1) is at St. Joe's (5-1) on Wednesday.

About half of Western New York's wrestling teams will be in action on Dec. 29 as Newfane, Akron and Pine Valley will all host invitationals.
