RUSSIANS LAY DOWN BARRAGE ON REBELS DUG IN AT GROZNY

Russian artillery guns unleashed salvo after salvo on the besieged Chechen capital Sunday, targeting the edge of the city where well-entrenched rebels have fended off repeated attacks by government troops.

The relentless artillery fire came a day after intensive bombing raids Saturday, when Russian jets and helicopter gunships flew 60 sorties, striking rebel positions around Grozny and in the southern mountains. The Russian air force was mostly quiet Sunday, with only occasional reconnaissance planes buzzing high above the city.
