The Old Fort Niagara Association is seeking volunteers to help open the Fort Niagara State Park Officers Club in Youngstown to the public on Columbus Day Weekend. Volunteers are needed to serve as greeters and tour guides between noon and 4 p.m. on Oct. 9 and 10. Training will be provided by David Dickinson of the Officers Club Museum Coalition.
The club features historic murals begun in 1944 when German artist Ernst Willie was a prisoner of war at Fort Niagara, as well as others by Hubert H. Crawford, Eugene Dyczkowski and Major Tom Loftin Johnson. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to call Ray Wigle at 745-7611.
The King Urban Life Center, 938 Genesee St., needs people to help in its literacy program, which runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. For information, call 891-7912.
Call 4 Action, which is run by WIVB-TV, is seeking individuals who would like to help people who need assistance. Volunteers should be willing to make a commitment of three to four hours, one day per week, Monday through Friday. Once trained, volunteers refer people to various service agencies and then follow through to make sure that the problem has been solved. Call 879-4968 for information.
