Golf pro Marlene Davis of Lancaster shot 74-72 and placed second in the Northeast Section Championship for LPGA teaching and club professionals. The event was held at Queenstown, Md., and included a field of 50. Davis finished three shots behind the winner.

The Pittsburgh Penguins traded their highest-paid defenseman, Kevin Hatcher, to the New York Rangers today for defenseman Peter Popovic.

The Penguins were eager to trim their payroll after signing defenseman Darius Kasparaitis to a $3 million, two-year contract Wednesday. Hatcher was the Penguins' highest-paid defenseman at $3.1 million per season and was the second-highest paid player on the team to Jaromir Jagr's $10.4 million.

Goalkeeper Tom Presthus stopped a penalty kick in the final minute as D.C. United beat Olimpia of Honduras, 1-0, in a quarterfinal of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. In the second game, Necaxa of Mexico beat Saprissa of Costa Rica, 3-2. The winners will meet in a semifinal Friday, with the Chicago Fire playing Alajeula of Costa Rica in the other semifinal.
