Crag Burn's Jim Smith, the runner-up last weekend in the New York State Mid-Amateur Championship, walked away with first place in the first Buffalo District Match Play championship at the Country Club of Buffalo.

Playing 1-under-par golf, Smith defeated Fred Silver of Niagara Falls CC, 2 and 1, in the championship match.

In a morning semifinal, Smith defeated Tom Johnson of Tan Tara, 3 and 2. Silver won his semifinal by default over Tim Hume, the BDGA stroke play champion. Hume was forced to withdraw because of a scheduling conflict.

The two-day event began Monday with a field of 16 golfers, the point-getters in 13 selected local tournaments.
