A Riley Street man who was convicted of murder in 1983 was arrested Saturday for sending a death threat to his wife, authorities said.
Carl Stewart, 43, was accused of violating an order of protection by mailing the letter in which he stated he was going to kill his wife and her pastor, south District Detective Lisa Kogut said.
Stewart was charged with first-degree criminal contempt and second-degree harassment. His wife has moved to a shelter "for her safety," according to Kogut.
On Jan. 23, 1987, Stewart succeeded in having his conviction on a second-degree murder charge overturned. He had been serving a prison term of 25 years to life in Attica Correctional Facility, police officials said.
