Elsie Irene Thomas "Jackie" Gabriel, 96, of Buffalo, died Wednesday (Sept. 22, 1999) at the Waterfront Health Care Center in Buffalo after a lengthy illness.
Born Feb. 18, 1903, in Toronto, Mrs. Gabriel married Chester A. Gabriel on Oct. 11, 1921 and they moved to Buffalo several years later and lived in numerous locations throughout the city and then in Fort Erie, Ont.
Mrs. Gabriel was a supervisor of environmental service at Buffalo General Hospital for 22 years before retiring at age 66. She was recognized with many awards for outstanding service.
Mrs. Gabriel was an avid bowler who participated in the sport well into her 80s. She was an active member of the Metropolitan United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women's organization and the predecessor of the Buffalo General Hospital Employee's Fellowship Fund. She also was an active officer of a national housekeeping organization.
Mrs. Gabriel was remembered for her steadfast faith in God and dedication to helping the city's needy population. She and her husband traveled the world for 20 years.
Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Juanita Irma Murphy of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 657 Best St. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
