A Republican candidate for an at-large seat on the Buffalo Common Council was accused of taking $130 worth of diapers Thursday in Depew.
Depew police said they charged Mark D. Lopez, 32, of Lester Street with petit larceny after the manager of the Wegmans store on Dick Road reported Lopez had left without paying for 20 packages of diapers.
Police said the store manager described the delivery truck driven by the man who took the diapers and officers located the vehicle a short time later in Cheektowaga.
Lopez was arrested after the store manager identified him, Capt. Thomas J. Domino said.
Lopez was released on his own recognizance, pending arraignment at 7 p.m. Monday in Depew Justice Court.
Lopez, one of three Republican candidates for at-large Common Council seats in the November election, was unavailable Thursday for comment.
A truck driver active in the New York Army National Guard, Lopez ran unsuccessfully in 1997 as a Republican candidate for the Lovejoy District seat on the Common Council.
