A freighter crewman died Wednesday in an accident aboard a ship in the Welland Canal, Niagara Regional Police said.
The victim was a 52-year-old boatswain aboard Lok Naheshwari, a freighter registered in Bombay, India. A native of Maharashtra state of India, the victim's name was withheld by authorities pending the notification of relatives.
Police said a top portion of a pedestal roller snapped off its mount, causing the rope it was redirecting to be propelled back into the victim. The force of the rope caused massive chest injuries and threw the victim into a steel guardrail, killing him instantly.
At the time of the accident, the freighter was tying up to the west wall of the canal below Lock One in St. Catharines, police said.
