A Mass of Christian Burial for Robert E. Stedler, a retired M&T Bank vice president, was offered today in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Town of Tonawanda.
Interment was in United German and French Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
Stedler, 82, died Monday (Sept. 20, 1999) in his City of Tonawanda home.
Born in Buffalo, Stedler was a Canisius High School graduate and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. Before joining the Army, he was employed by Curtiss-Wright.
He retired from M&T Bank in the 1970s.
Stedler was past president of the Canisius College Alumni Association and a founding member of St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, North Tonawanda.
Stedler's father, Bob, was a longtime sports editor of The Buffalo Evening News and his twin brother, Richard J. of the Town of Tonawanda, is a retired News sportswriter.
He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Holy Name Society of St. John the Baptist Church and a member of Milton J. Brounschidle Post 205, American Legion. He played in amateur and American Legion baseball leagues.
Besides his brother, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Margaret C. Carberry; a son, Joseph R. of the City of Tonawanda.; and three grandsons.
