A drawn-looking Mikhail Gorbachev walked behind his wife's coffin today as Russians said a final farewell to Raisa Gorbachev, praising the personality and style that she brought to the once-obscure role of first lady of the Soviet Union.

Hundreds of Russians and foreign guests brought wreaths, bouquets and condolences as she lay in state at the Russian Cultural Foundation, which she founded.

Gorbachev, the last leader of the Soviet Union, sat nearby during the viewing, then walked with his daughter and two granddaughters behind the open coffin as it was put in a hearse for the journey to historic Novodevichy Cemetery.

A private requiem service preceded the burial.
