As many as a dozen cars ran over a bicyclist on the Florida Turnpike Wednesday, spreading body parts across 200 feet of the highway, police said.
Authorities were searching for a hit-and-run driver and trying to identify the victim.
The bicyclist was riding on a highway overpass near Universal Studios Florida about 6:30 a.m. when a car struck him and sent him flying over the railing, police said.
The victim landed about 20 feet below on the Turnpike where he was struck by a succession of cars. Police have not been able to identify the man or give a description of any detail.
"We don't really know how many drivers knew they were hitting a person," Orlando Police Department spokesman Orlando Rolon said.
Ray Howard of Orlando told police he witnessed the accident. "I saw sparks flying and the driver slowed down but then took off," he said.
Howard said he did not know until later that someone had been thrown off the overpass and been killed.
"It just sounded horrible," Howard said.
