MOTHER WHO LEFT NEWBORN AT HOSPITAL FACES CHARGES

A 29-year-old woman has been charged with child abandonment after dropping off her newborn son at Geneva General Hospital and telling doctors she had found the infant in a box along a back road.

Police said today that Jacqueline M. Pethybridge of Seneca Falls later admitted that she had given birth to the baby Monday in her car and left him at the hospital because she could not afford to care for him.

Police said they became suspicious when they observed blood on Pethybridge and in her car.

The infant, only a few hours old, was wearing a diaper and wrapped in a blanket when Pethybridge brought him to the hospital in a cardboard box, according to the Seneca County Sheriff's Department. The child is in good health, hospital officials said.
