Forty-four parents delinquent in child-support payments were targeted for arrest this morning by the Erie County Sheriff's Department, authorities said.
The roundup of 37 fathers and seven mothers began at 6 in West Seneca, Hamburg, Cheektowaga, Angola, Lackawanna, the Town of Tonawanda and Buffalo, Sheriff Patrick M. Gallivan said.
As of midday, 19 of the parents, 13 fathers and six mothers, had been arrested.
"The sheriff takes the issue of deadbeat parents very seriously. People must be held accountable for their actions or lack thereof and deal with the consequences," said Mary Murray, Gallivan's spokeswoman.
The parents, who owe thousands of dollars in unpaid child support, were scheduled to be arraigned later today in Erie County Family Court.
This is the second time Gallivan has ordered a roundup of mothers and fathers who have failed to pay child support.
