BELL ATLANTIC SYSTEM LETS CUSTOMERS FREEZE THEIR CHOICE OF CARRIER

Bell Atlantic has set up an automated system to help prevent slamming.

The system, which is being introduced in New York, allows Bell Atlantic customers to freeze or unfreeze their choice of a regional toll or long-distance company at any time, simply by calling a toll-free 800 number.

Slamming is the practice of changing a customer's regional or long-distance company without getting the proper authorization from a customer. Bell Atlantic said allowing customers to freeze their long-distance or regional carriers will help prevent slamming by keeping the carrier from being changed unless it is directly requested by the customer.

To use the system, Bell Atlantic customer can call (800) 305-4838. Customer must have the six-digit customer code that follows their phone number on the front page of their Bell Atlantic bill to use the system.
