ON THIS DAY -- In 1787, the U.S. Constitution was completed and signed by a majority of the delegates attending the constitutional convention in Philadelphia . . . In 1862, Union forces hurled back a Confederate invasion of Maryland in the Civil War Battle of Antietam . . . In 1939, the Soviet Union invaded Poland, more than two weeks after Nazi Germany launched its assault that started World War II . . . In 1949, more than 130 people died when fire gutted the Canadian passenger steamer Noronic at a pier in Toronto . . . In 1984, Progressive Conservative leader Brian Mulroney took office as Canada's 18th prime minister. . . .

MILLENNIAL CITY -- "London has been elegantly planning, erecting structures and beautifying the cityscape for decades to create the Millennial City," according to Bonnie Gordon Flickinger, Ph.D., who will be teaching a five-week study course about London from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursdays, Sept. 23 through Oct. 21, in Trinity Center, 371 Delaware Ave.

A frequent visitor to London, she will tell about crossing the Atlantic on the luxurious Queen Elizabeth 2 and how the magnificent London has become "stunningly dressed up for the Millennium." For information on registration and fees, call 852-8317. . . .

MUSICAL HISTORY -- The Barker Historical Museum at Day and Main streets in Fredonia will feature a talk by Carol Boltz on the parlor organ and music from the Civil War to the early 20th century at 1 p.m. Saturday. She will use the museum's working pump organ during her talk. and will encourage audience participation.

The program will be held in the museum's Victorian Parlor. The program is part of a series on how music and historical events influenced have each other since Revolutionary War times. The production is free and open to the public. . . .

SMART KIDS -- Assemblywoman Sandra Lee Wirth of West Seneca presented legislative resolutions Thursday to all 21 sixth-grade pupils at Queen of Heaven School in recognition of their scholarship.

Each student posted grades of 90 or higher for the 1998-1999 school year. Judith Talbot is principal of the school, and Donna Biggie is homeroom teacher of the class. . . .

FREE FOOD -- LeRoy United Methodist Church will serve a free dinner to anyone in the community who needs a good meal at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 26, in the church, 10 Trigon Park. Home delivery can be arranged by calling the church office at 768-8980. . . .

BEEF EVENT -- Holland United Methodist Church will sponsor its annual roast beef dinner, featuring custom-carved beef served family style, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, in the church, Partridge Road, Holland. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for children under five. . . .

BAZAAR TIME -- The Ladies Aid Society of Wales Hollow Community Lutheran Church, 5445 E. Creek Road, South Wales, will sponsor its annual fall bazaar from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in the church. The lunch menu includes sloppy joes and homemade soup. Also to be offered are a rummage sale, baked goods and crafts. . . .
