DESIGNNOTES

This week"s favorite object
Among the sea of savory patterns and colors out there, plain white dinnerware makes a superb statement. Like a classic white T-shirt, it works with everything.

Set a table using white dishes and pastel accessories and watch how your soft-colored linens and table accents appear fresher and cleaner. Similarly, white brightens brights, punches up primaries and serves as the ideal backdrop to any culinary creation you can whip up.

And there are other reasons why white dinnerware works so well, note the makers of Rosenthal china (who offer the pattern called "Moon" shown here):

White adds sophistication to other neutrals. Try it with shades of gray, ivory or metallic silver. Complete the picture with sparkling crystal and mirrored place mats.

White works wonders with gold. Set all-white plates against a gold lace cloth or place gold service plates under plain white dinner plates to create an attractive background edge.

White dishes also provide textural contrast to a variety of backgrounds. Pair with a rich velvet or brocade cloth for winter holidays or with soft lace layered over a pretty cloth for a special celebration.
