GRAND JURY BRINGS CHARGE OF MURDER IN STRANGULATION

A Herkimer Street man was indicted Thursday on murder and weapons charges linked to the decomposing corpse of a woman police found in a closet of his abandoned flat after neighbors complained of bad odors a month ago.

Jailed since his Aug. 18 arrest, Alexander J. Molnar, 38, was expected to be arraigned this afternoon on charges that include second-degree murder in the strangulation death of Janis Johnson, 42. Her body was found Aug. 7 in a closet of the Herkimer Street flat Molnar had just abandoned.

Erie County District Attorney Frank J. Clark said authorities believe Ms. Johnson, a Richmond Avenue resident known to be an acquaintance of Molnar, was beaten and strangled between July 25 and Aug. 6. A motive has yet to be established.
