Members of the City Council's public safety committee -- concerned about the well-being of children who might need to use a taxi -- want to prevent convicted sex offenders from obtaining a license to be a cab driver in the city.

Committee Chairman Anthony Raffa said at the panel's work session Tuesday night, that under current law, a convicted sex offender who has been out of prison for five years may apply for a license.

Corporation Counsel Richard Sotir said a man convicted of a sex offense five years ago recently applied for a taxi cab operator's license.
