Frontier Central School District awarded more than $600,000 in contracts Tuesday night for districtwide communications and computer wiring.
"It was actually more money to upgrade it than it was to tear it all out and replace it," Richard A. Binner, assistant superintendent for business, said of the new phone system.
Mitel Communications won the contract for a districtwide telephone system with a bid of $251,052. Binner said the new phone system is to be completed by September 2000.
The district's wide area network infrastructure will be completed by Adelphia Cable, which bid $333,010. All schools and the Educational Center will be wired during the project.
Ronco Specialized Systems will be installing a new public-address system at Pinehurst Elementary School for $36,884.
The district set aside $625,000 as part of the 1998-99 capital improvement budget to complete the communications renovations.
Also Tuesday, Superintendent Gerald P. Glose said the district's buildings and grounds and personnel are well-prepared for the start of the new school year today. He said 53 staff members have been hired over the summer.
"We are well-positioned as a district for the 1999-2000 school year," Glose said.
The district also heard a report from auditors from Deloitte & Touche, who said the district's financial books are in excellent shape.
