ARTPARK IS SITE OF THIS YEAR'S PEACH FESTIVAL

Artpark this weekend will be the stage for a generous helping of nature's art -- peaches.

The Lewiston Kiwanis Peach Festival is moving the annual fest to the Upper Terrace of Artpark, shifting activities from Academy Park on Center Street, which currently is the scene of a street-reconstruction project.

Since 1958, the festival has been a celebration of the fruit of Niagara County's many orchards. Peaches, fresh produce and other peachy sensations, including the ever-popular peach pie, will be available at a farmers' market during the festival.

The festival's advisory chairman, Jerald I. Wolfgang, said the festival, which runs Friday through Sunday, is accessible via the park's Portage Road entrance.

A new feature of the festival is the antique car show, to be presented by the Safe Home Foundation from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The Niagara Frontier Firemen's Association will offer safety demonstrations during that event.

The festival gets under way with a grand opening at 6 p.m. Friday. Conklin Shows will provide rides, game booths and food. Activities wind down at 11 p.m.

Also, Friday is the start of the eighth annual cheerleading contest for varsity, junior varsity and youth football cheerleading squads, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on the festival stage.

A peach dessert recipe contest final will be held at 7 p.m.

On Saturday and Sunday, events run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Saturday's events include: 5K fun run, beginning at 9 a.m., starting and finishing in front of Key Bank on Center Street (proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society); 11 a.m., festival parade, featuring more than 100 units, beginning at the Red Brick School House, 145 N. Fourth St., proceeding along Center Street to Artpark (parade awards will be given at 3 p.m. on stage).
