Two police officers were sprayed with their own mace in a struggle to arrest two men on marijuana charges at the Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Center, police reported Sunday.
Roving Anti Crime Officers Shawn Larrabee and Christopher Clark were on foot patrol Saturday on the second floor of the center when they saw a group of people smoking marijuana, police said.
When the officers attempted to make arrests, one of the suspects, Adam M. Schnabel, 20, of Haussauer Road, Getzville, became "very combative and had to be sprayed with chemical mace," police said.
As Larrabee and Clark tried to physically subdue Schnabel, a large crowd formed and attempted to obstruct them from performing their duty, police said.
In the ensuing struggle, flying mace from their own cans splashed both officers in the face. With eyes stinging, they took Schnabel and another suspect, Patrick W. Anderson, 20, of Upper Valley Road, Rochester, to the city lockup and charged them with obstructing government administration and resisting arrest.
Larrabee and Clark washed away the effects of the pepper spray with cold water, police said.
