OFFICER PROBED IN SHOOTING OF SON

Police were investigating the wounding of a 22-year-old man, shot late Saturday by his father, an off-duty New York police officer, during a domestic dispute in the father's Queens home, police say.

The argument between Lt. James Atkinson, a 26-year veteran who lives in the Richmond Hill section, and his son Michael escalated when the younger man charged at his father with a knife, police said.

Atkinson pulled a gun and fired once, striking his son in the torso, police said.

The son was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
