The Buffalo Zoological Society has now decided that a move to the waterfront is a bad idea and too expensive. Good! I have always thought the waterfront was not a good location for a zoo because of the cold harsh winter winds that would blow over the lake and across the open expanse used by the animals.
I propose that the zoo take over the very ordinary and unsporty Delaware Park Golf Course. It could build a wonderful, larger zoo and still make limited use of the present buildings, at much less expense. A simple pitch-and-putt golf course could be located at the extreme west end of the present course.
This would satisfy zoo neighbors who wish to retain the zoo in its present location. I realize this proposal would not be popular with a few avid golfers and would be disliked by a few people who fight anything not originally planned by Frederick Law Olmsted, but it would keep this all-age, year-round attraction within our great park and a really great zoo could be developed to enhance this beautiful area.
