MCKINLEY NOT THE FIRST

A Jan. 19 article in The News stated incorrectly that William McKinley in 1901 was the first president to visit Buffalo. In the summer of 1817, President James Monroe rode here on horseback from Niagara Falls. A reception was held for him in a local tavern.

Millard Fillmore also visited Buffalo while he was president in the 1850s, and McKinley visited Buffalo in 1898 to attend the national convention of the Grand Army of the Republic.
