RESTAURANT INSPECTIONS

Restaurant inspections are conducted by the Niagara County Health Department.

Every establishment that serves food is evaluated at least annually by the department. Restaurants rated as high-risk, because they serve children or the elderly, or serve foods that require a lot of processing or are prepared hours or days before serving, are inspected at least twice a year.

There is no rating for exemplary restaurants; only violations are noted.

Many restaurants will have one violation or more at one time or another. They are coded by the health department as: Critical items that could lead to food-borne illness, which must be immediately attended to; or as items relating to sanitation, design, maintenance and cleanliness, which must be corrected by the next regular inspection or as soon as an inspector returns.

LEWISTON
Clarkson House, 810 Center St. No violations. Inspected Jan. 8.

LOCKPORT
South Lockport Ladies Auxiliary, Inc. 5666 South Transit Road. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: One (hose at utility sink needs backflow device or to be kept above sink rim level). No food preparation at time of inspection, Dec. 9.

Sugar Shak, 460 West Ave. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: One (some thermometers missing in refrigeration units). Inspected Dec. 15.

Wrights Corners Presbyterian Church, 6515 Ridge Road. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: Two (hand washing sign needed in women's restroom, issued; accurate thermometer needed in both refrigerators). Inspected Dec. 4.

NIAGARA FALLS
Summit Park Cinema, 2071 Sawyer Drive. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: Two (ice scoop handle stored in ice, corrected; hand washing sign needed in men's restroom, issued). Inspected Dec. 21.

Jaco's Pizzeria, 7320 Buffalo Ave. Critical violations: One (cross-contamination possible due to raw ground beef being stored above onions in walk-in cooler, beef removed to lower shelf). Sanitation, design, etc.: Thirteen (accurate thermometers needed in all refrigeration units; apparent tobacco use in food storage area; proper hair restraints needed on food service workers; wiping cloths not properly stored in sanitizing solution; food build-up on food contact surfaces and meat slicer; food build-up on bottom and outside of cooler and inside of microwave; self-closing device needed on restroom door; single service towels needed at handwashing facility; covered container needed in restroom; food and grease build-up on floors around and behind equipment and food preparation area; ceiling tiles missing in rear food preparation area; food build-up and peeling paint near three-bay sink; gaskets broken and in disrepair on cooler). Inspected Dec. 2. As of reinspection Jan. 5, no critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: Two (floors around and behind equipment still need further cleaning; food build-up and peeling paint on walls near three-bay sink). All other previous violations corrected.

American Legion John J. Welch No. 381, 923 Niagara Ave. No violations. No food preparation at time of inspection Jan. 5.

Knights of Columbus Club, 715 Third St. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: Two (end caps needed on light shields; thermometer needed in refrigerator). Inspected Jan. 20.

Taste Good, 1609 Military Road. Critical violations: One (food testing thermometer broken). Sanitation, design, etc.: Five (food left uncovered in freezer; need scoop with handle for flour and rice containers; need proper storage area for knives; hand washing area needs to be cleaned; raw meat should not be stored above ready-to-eat foods). Inspected Jan. 6.

The Village Gate, 2265 Niagara St. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: Two (beer cooler ceiling needs to be cleaned; end caps needed for light shield). Inspected Jan. 5.

NORTH TONAWANDA
Sportsplex, Inc., 90 Ridge Road. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: One (hand washing sign needed for employee restroom and station behind counter). Inspected Dec. 23.

WILSON
Independent Ideas, Inc. 273 Young St. No critical violations. Sanitation, design, etc.: One (proper washing, rinsing, sanitizing, air drying procedures needed at sink). Inspected Dec. 7.
