BUFFALO MAN CHARGED IN THRUWAY HIT AND RUN

A Buffalo man has been arrested in a Jan. 10 hit-and-run crash on the Thruway at the Kensington Expressway exit in Cheektowaga that left a man hospitalized for two weeks.

David M. Smith II, 30, of Anderson Place was charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of a serious personal injury auto accident, speed not reasonable and prudent for conditions, and failure to use due care for a pedestrian.

He is scheduled for arraignment next Thursday morning in Cheektowaga Town Court.

Murugan Arumugam, 31, of Grand Island, lost control of his car on the Thruway exit ramp to the Kensington Expressway and got stuck in a snowbank early Jan. 10. As he stood on the shoulder of the ramp, a car driven by Smith hit him, police said.

Smith, police said, got out of his car, along with two passengers, one of the passengers even walking to Arumugam, who was on his back, suffering from a massive compound
fracture of his right thigh.

Meanwhile, another car pulled over and the couple inside suggested that the passenger get help from the nearby state police barracks, about 100 yards away. However, the three got back into the car and left.

Investigators traced a partial license plate number and description of the vehicle to Smith.
