REPORTERS' NOTEBOOK

OLAF FUB SEZ: It was Anglo-American essayist Logan Pearsall Smith (1865-1946) who noted: "How awful to reflect that what people say of us is true." . . .

ON THIS DAY -- In 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria . . . In 1880, Thomas A. Edison received a patent for his electric incandescent lamp . . . In 1944, the Soviet Union announced the end of the deadly German siege of Leningrad, which had lasted for more than two years . . . In 1967, astronauts Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, Edward H. White and Roger B. Chaffee died in a flash fire during a test aboard their Apollo I spacecraft at Cape Kennedy, Fla. . . . In 1977, the Vatican reaffirmed the Roman Catholic Church's ban on female priests. . . .

If I
If I died tomorrow,

A few people might weep over me

Then the world would go

Right back to being

What it always used to be!

-- Sean O'Leary
MATHEMATICS -- The Gifted Math Program at the University at Buffalo is accepting nominations of outstanding sixth-grade mathematics students submitted by schools and parents for its Fall 1999 entering class.

A three-hour battery of tests, including the math section of the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, will be administered in March to about 200 nominees to select students for the 60 available places in the new class.

The program, in its 19th year, offers advanced math courses. Participants complete about four semesters of university-level methematics as part of the six-year program and may accumulate a total of 22 college credit hours.
