LOCAL HEROS ON WINFREY SHOW

From the fragile ice and chilly waters of Lake Erie, to the bright lights of national television and then the balmy breezes of the Bahamas, two local heros are getting more than 15 minutes of fame.

Capt. Kevin Caffery and Detective Chet Krupczyk of the Erie County Sheriff's Department appeared as guests in a taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show entitled "Surviving the Blizzard of 99." The program will air at 4 p.m. next Friday, Feb. 5, on WIVB-TV, Channel 4.

Caffery and Krupczyk were credited with saving the lives of two young boys who ran into trouble earlier this month on the lake ice off the Town of Evans. The boys and their parents also attended the show's taping in Chicago.

Then, Caffery and Krupczyk and their families will join Ms. Winfrey and her other guests for a week-long, expenses-paid vacation in the Bahamas, where Ms. Winfrey will be taping future, unrelated shows.
