Evelyn H. Schnabel, 94, of the City of Tonawanda, a retired Buffalo teacher, died Monday (Jan. 25, 1999) in Crestwood Nursing Home, Wheatfield, after a brief illness.
Born in Buffalo, Miss Schnabel was a graduate of Hutchinson Central High School, Buffalo Normal School and Buffalo State Teachers College.
She taught for 56 years in Buffalo schools and won the Teacher of the Year Award at School 38 for four consecutive years from 1944 to 1947. She retired in 1974.
She often bought clothes for her less-fortunate students. Widely traveled, she went to Africa several times and rode a camel in Egypt. She used experiences from her travels in her lessons with her classes.
After her retirement, she worked to restore her father's birthplace in Muskoka, Ont.
Surviving are two sisters, Shirley Trouse of the Town of Tonawanda and June Schierstein of the City of Tonawanda, and a brother, Arthur of the City of Tonawanda.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Hamburg.
