LINCOLN CENTER CANCELS SALE OF JOHNS PAINTING

Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts decided Monday not to sell its Jasper Johns painting "Numbers, 1964," which had drawn offers of up to $15 million.

Board members last month agreed to sell the painting to raise money to improve the aging buildings in the Lincoln Center complex.

But they became concerned by public opposition to the sale, which would have been the first of a public artwork by the center.
