Janet I. Phelps of East Aurora, a librarian for West Seneca and East Aurora public schools for more than 30 years, died Saturday (Jan. 23, 1999) in Mercy Hospital. She was 90.
She was born in East Aurora, in the same home where she and her late sister, Beulah, lived their entire lives.
Miss Phelps attended East Aurora schools and graduated from East Aurora High School in 1928.
She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Buffalo in 1932.
Miss Phelps served as the librarian in West Seneca public schools until the mid-1950s, when she assumed the same post with East Aurora High School. She retired in 1969.
She and her sister shared an avid interest in the history of the Roycroft Inn. Both recalled the landmark's heyday, in the early 1900s, when the campus was a haven for artisans and visitors alike.
The two also summered together at Chautauqua Institution every year until the late 1980s.
Miss Phelps was a member of Baker Memorial United Methodist Church.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at 20 Park Place, East Aurora. Private burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, East Aurora.
