Alex Wilson of Clarence has joined the ranks of winners on the World Cup circuit in mogul skiing.

Wilson captured first place in the Sprint U.S. Freestyle Grand National, which was held Saturday in Heavenly, Calif. He finished ahead of Richard Gay of France and Caleb Martin of Colorado.

Wilson had to battle through a severe storm that dumped 18 inches of snow on the course, leaving it soft and powdery.

"I was actually hoping it would dump snow," said Wilson, who was on the U.S. Olympic team last year in Nagano. "This was a great win for me -- it couldn't have come at a better time."

Wilson's previous best finish in a World Cup event was second in a dual moguls event in France in 1996. His next stop on the tour is in British Columbia.
