The U.S. State Department is warning against non-essential travel to Yemen after the kidnapping incident Dec. 28 and 29 in which four of the hostages were killed. Another abduction occurred in the past week. U.S. citizens in Yemen are urged to exercise a high level of vigilance and avoid travel outside major cities.

In another kind of warning, the U.S. Embassy in Quito, Ecuador, reports the Guagua Pichincha volcano, located west of Quito, has been showing elevated signs of activity recently, with more tremors, a rise in its magma level and an explosion Dec. 23, the second-largest blast since it started acting up in August. Travelers in Ecuador were advised to pay close attention to the media in Quito for updates and access the Web site at for additional information.
