A man died Friday night when he was trapped beneath a 100-ton Conrail cargo car that derailed in this Genesee County town.
Rescue crews struggled into the early morning hours today to free the man, whose name was being withheld until his family could be notified.
Conrail officials said the local train was delivering a load of grain to the Cargill feed plant in Alexander, 40 miles southwest of Rochester, when the train toppled over at a grade crossing at about 6:30 p.m.
Train workers had separated the 100-ton grain car from the rest of the train and were using a locomotive to push it into the feed plant when the accident happened, said Conrail spokesman Bob Libkind.
The victim was at the side of the freight car when it toppled over, crushing him against the ground, Libkind said.
