BROADWAY FIRE BLAMED ON MAN SMOKING CRACK

A crack-smoking man caused the fire that heavily damaged a building on Broadway, Buffalo police reported Thursday.

The fire at 1396 Broadway started in an upper apartment bedroom after an occupant, identified by police as Harvey Jones, 31, discarded matches and crack-smoking materials, according to police reports.

The ensuing fire, reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, caused more than $25,000 damage to the large 2 1/2 -story structure.

Jones was arrested on charges of arson and criminal mischief by Detective Robert T. Meegan of the Fire Investigation Unit.
