SYRACUSE KAYAKER DROWNS DESPITE RESCUE EFFORTS

A veteran kayaker drowned in the cold, swift waters of the Moose River after becoming pinned among rocks on the river bottom. Martin Parkinson Jr., 45, of the Syracuse suburb of Camillus, was pronounced dead on arrival Sunday at St. Luke's Memorial Hospital Center in New Hartford.

The drowning occurred about eight miles east of Port Leyden and about 75 miles northeast of Syracuse, Garrison said. Parkinson was kayaking behind three friends as they paddled a remote stretch of river popular with kayakers because of its rapids and small waterfalls.

The three friends battled swift currents and water temperatures close to 40 degrees before giving up on attempts to rescue Parkinson.
