Officials were trying to determine what led an eighth-grade girl to fatally shoot herself in the head in a school restroom on the first day back from Thanksgiving break.
The 14-year-old died Monday night at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City after shooting herself earlier in the day with a small-caliber handgun at Hancock Central School. The girl was alone in the bathroom when the shooting took place. No other children or teachers were hurt, superintendent Jeff Roudebush said.
Students were sent home for the day, and additional help was being called in from other school districts for those needing counseling, he said.
State police Maj. William Foley said investigators were trying to find out where the girl got the gun.
