Akron Central opened its boys basketball season with a 48-34 non-league victory over Byron-Bergen as Mike Dean led the way with 18 points and Craig Rehwaldt had 13 rebounds. Rich Moleski added 10 rebounds and seven steals for the Tigers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Journey Gunderson scored 11 points and pulled down 14 rebounds and Krystal Widring had 11 points and 10 boards in Maple Grove's 32-31 victory over Frewsburg in the opener for both. Beth Johnessee had 10 points and 12 rebounds for losing Bears.

In another opener, Clymer downed Westfield, 50-29, in a non-league game as Jennifer Hulett and Karri Borst scored 12 points each and combined for 16 rebounds. Katie Clifford had 12 for Westfield.
