YOUTH SHOT AT SEVEN TIMES WHILE FLEEING HOUSE FIRE

The occupant of a house on Person Street was shot at today as he fled his burning home, police said.

A Molotov cocktail was hurled through the front window of a house at 247 Person at 1:40 a.m., and as a 17-year-old youth climbed out a window to escape, someone shot at him seven times but missed.

The house contains three apartments, but two of them are occupied by senior citizens, and police said the young people staying in the front apartment were the intended targets, Fire Investigator Margaret Keane said.

The apartment is rented to a 17-year-old girl, and her male cousin, also 17, was staying with her, the investigator said.

"The girl told us she was in bed and heard a crash and looked out and saw the living room on fire," Investigator Keane said. "Then she heard shots."

A neighbor said he saw two people dressed in dark clothing running from the scene.

The occupants of the apartment claimed they had no idea why someone would try to harm them, Investigator Keane said.

Damage was listed at $8,000 to the building and $3,000 to the contents, fire officials said.

Seven shell casings were recovered, and one bullet was found in an inside wall of the house, police from the Broadway Station said.
