The University at Buffalo women's basketball team rebounded from its first loss of the year with a 75-54 victory over winless Southwestern Louisiana in the consolation game of the Rutgers Coca-Cola Classic Sunday at Piscataway, N.J.
UB (5-1) broke a 10-10 tie with an 8-1 run and never looked back. The Bulls led at the half, 28-18.
Mari McClure led UB with 16 points and four assists, Catherine Jacob added 13 points and four assists and Tiffany Bell had 12 points and four steals.
No. 11 Rutgers (6-1), a 70-47 winner over UB in the first round, defeated Arizona State, 67-48, in the championship game.
Meanwhile, Niagara fell to 0-3 with a 73-58 loss to visiting Cornell (2-3). Dana Fitchlee (Holy Angels) and Meaghan Coleman led the Purple Eagles with 14 points each. Amy Getman pulled down six rebounds and scored 12 points. Cornell's Kristie Riccio led all scorers with 22 points.
WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Niagara goaltenders Tania Pinelli and Vicky Topper combined to blank host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 4-0. Pinelli made 25 saves in the first two periods as the Purple Eagles (4-2-0) opened a 3-0 lead on goals by Kelly Keyes, Steph Romain (who also had two assists) and Alissa Coomey. Topper made five saves in the third period, which saw Jen Skalski get the final goal.
Niagara put 50 shots on goalie Laura DeNuccio as RPI slipped to 2-1-0.
