Chimayo has one of the best restaurants in New Mexico, Rancho de Chimayo. Well worth the 25-minute drive from Santa Fe, the restaurant is in a century-old adobe hacienda, the former home of Hemeneglido and Trinidad Jaramillo. White-washed walls and hand-stripped ceiling beams, cozy dining rooms and terraced patios, the Rancho de Chimayo is still owned and operated by the Jaramillo family who use locally grown products in their centuries-old recipes.

Across the street is the Hacienda de Chimayo, (505) 351-2222, a restored 19th century inn that serves as a bed and breakfast. Two other excellent B&Bs in Chimayo are Casa Escondida (505) 351-4805, and La Posada de Chimayo (505) 351-4605.

East of Chimayo are the villages of Cordova, also known for its woodcarvers, and Truchas, were Robert Redford filmed the movie "The Milagro Beanfield War."
