Mike Isherwood scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal in the second period to give Niagara a 3-2 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Friday night before 2,134 at Houston Field House in Troy.
With just 32 seconds left in the period, Isherwood won a faceoff and beat goalie Scott Prekaski.
"What's nice is that we're able to win close games on the road, and that shows a lot of character," said Niagara coach Blaise MacDonald.
RPI (4-4-0) opened the scoring midway through the first period when Andrew McPherson put a power-play shot past goalie Greg Gardner. Niagara (5-4) tied the game with a power-play goal by Mikko Sivonen with four seconds left in the first period.
Another power-play goal by Pete Gardiner gave RPI a 2-1 second-period lead. But Niagara (6-4-0) tied the game on Sivonen's second goal of the night.
Gardner finished with 31 saves, 15 in the second period. Prekaski stopped 28 shots.
Niagara travels to Union tonight for a 7:30 game.
Meanwhile, the Erie Community College men's hockey team knocked off Towson State, 9-2, in the University of Delaware Tournament. Towson is ranked No. 9 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.
Sophomore Rich Panaro (McKinley) and Tanner Catalano had two goals each for the Kats (6-4-1).
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Maggie Guidry's layup with 1 second left gave Canisius a 92-90 victory over Cornell in a game played before 147 at the Koessler Center. Guidry finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds while Jill Wilson added 23 points.
Melissa Fazio had 19 points and Casey Homan added 15 for St. Bonaventure in a 94-67 loss to Maine in the Dead River Company Classic in Orono, Maine. The Bonnies were outscored, 47-30, in the second half to fall to fall to 3-2.
