STUDENTS SEIZE OFFICE, DEMAND TRIAL FOR SUHARTO

Hundreds of student protesters occupied the attorney general's office for nearly 12 hours Tuesday to demand that Indonesia's former President Suharto be put on trial.

Meanwhile, about 2,000 other activists staged separate anti-government rallies, and the military said dozens of soldiers involved in deadly clashes with students earlier this month could face courts-martial.

More than 1,000 students entered the office compound of Attorney General Andi Muhammad Ghalib to demand that Suharto be tried on charges of corruption and human-rights abuses.

The 77-year-old former army general quit in May after riots and protests against his three decades of authoritarian rule.
