POLICE MAKE PUBLIC FOUR KNOWN KOPP ALIASES

Police on Tuesday made public four aliases that may be used by James C. Kopp, a radical abortion opponent who is sought for questioning in the Dr. Barnett A. Slepian murder case.

Authorities said Kopp, 44, could be using one of the following names:

Clyde Swenson.

Jim Cobb.

Jack Cotty.

Jack Crotty.

"These are all names that Kopp has used in the past, and we believe it is possible he may be traveling under one of those names now," Charlene Mahony, a spokeswoman for the State Police, said Tuesday.

Investigators also noted that Kopp is believed to have used the Social Security number of a South Bend, Ind., man who died last year at age 46. But police said they did not know if Kopp ever used the Indiana man's name as an alias.

"(Kopp) is a shadowy figure who has lived in a number of cities under a number of different names, and that is one reason why we are having such a hard time tracking him down," one investigator said.

Police declined to give any specific information on when, and under what circumstances, Kopp has used the aliases.

Authorities also released an updated photo of Kopp with a beard and glasses, but they said they do not know if Kopp currently has a beard or glasses.

Kopp is being sought on a material witness arrest warrant. He is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighing about 155-170 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. Amherst Police Chief John B. Askey said anyone who sees Kopp should contact a tip line at 1-800-281-1184, rather than making an attempt to stop or question him.

The federal government has posted two rewards, totaling $600,000, for information leading to the conviction of the sniper who killed Slepian on Oct. 23 in his East Amherst home.
