I am writing in response to the letter, "Catholic Church believes that abortion is murder." Why encourage a debate about hate crimes at a time like this? Now is the time for all Catholics to condemn publicly, unequivocably and wholeheartedly the murder of Dr. Barnett Slepian.
Now is the time for all Catholics to check their own hearts to make sure God's love is there motivating their actions, which means love for the innocent victims of abortion and love for those who commit the violence we Catholics see as murder. Love the person while you hate the act.
And now, certainly, is not the time to make oblique justification for violence by using the quote from John F. Kennedy that "those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." Instead, why not use one's imagination to nail that quote to the foot of the cross and see if it sticks?
